Having seen the Hairmax Comb product advertised in Harrington's catalog I hoped its claims for hair restoration might be truthful, especially as the blurb said that it was the only product of its type that was actually FDA approved. I thought the price in Harrington's catalog was excessive and found, what seemed to be the exact same product, advertised on Amazon.com at a substantially reduced price.
I placed an order for the comb and about two weeks later I returned home from work and found a large USPS Express Mail box, with something rattling around inside it, on my doorstop. The "something" turned out to be the comb, in quite a nice storage case (which was less than a quarter the size of the box but with no bubble-wrap or any other packaging material). Apart from the case, the comb and the power cord, there was nothing else enclosed (no advice note, no instructions, no warranty card, nothing). I plugged it into an electric socket and discovered it did not work.
I emailed the shipper with my story. He suggested I should try plugging it in a little harder and if it still did not work, I could replace it in the original shipping box and return it. He also wrote and I quote "All of the HairMax instructions are all PDF files and can be found here: [...]. Along with an instructional video here: [...]. Your warranty registration can be done here: [...]." (At least for someone with internet access, it might have been useful to have this information included in the original box).
It made no difference how hard I plugged in the cord, the comb still did not work and so I followed instructions (except that I did add bubble-wrap to the box to stop the device rattling around) and returned everything that I had received (power cord, comb and storage case).
Almost two more weeks elapsed before another USPS Express Box (exactly the same size as the earlier one), arrived on my doorstep. The contents this time were the comb, the power supply, written instructions plus a DVD all zip tied to a cardboard backer like a $10 kid's toy (this time there was no storage case and again, no packaging material).
The instruction suggested that the process of using the comb should take about 15 minutes three times a week. They indicated that the timing of the movement of the comb across the scalp, would be signaled by an audible beep from the comb. I plugged the power cord in and this time, the comb actually turned on and I was able to use it. There was, however, no "beep" to help me time the comb's movement across the scalp.
By this time, as can be imagined, I was becoming skeptical about the value and wisdom of my purchase and so I returned to the web to see if I could locate any believable reviews that might support the advertising claims for the comb. I did, in fact, find two reviews, apparently by independent reviewers, which failed to find any beneficial results from fairly extended trial use (several months). I was unable to find any independent positive reviews.
Having made the purchase, I intend to use the comb in accordance with the instructions. I will not hold my breath.
